Geocache Description:

Although stark in its beauty, Damaraland is one of the most scenic parts of Namibia and travellers cannot fail to notice the beautiful rock formations throughout the area.  Amidst all the volcanic rocks of Damaraland it is somewhat surprising to come across this castle of sandstone rising above the surrounding plains. You will easily recognise the Ogre as he surveys his domain.

This is a remnant of the sand dunes which covered the area about 130 million years ago. Take note of the obvious layers which are known as bedding planes and give a good indication of the prevailing wind directions.  The fascinating shapes have been eroded over time by the wind which blows relentlessly across the barren landscape.

There is a nearby settlement called Vrede and evidence of a market place close to the outcrop. Please use the necessary amount of stealth when searching for the cache as there may be herdsmen around. Take the time to walk right around the outcrop and look at the different erosion features.

Remember you are in an open area, so take the necessary care and precautions and be aware that snakes and scorpions are common throughout Damaraland. The cache seems to be missing, but until it is replaced a photolog of you at the sandcastle will be accepted as proof of a find.
