This traditional cache is a small platic container. It is located within easy walking distance from the village of Wensley on a newly re-opend public footpath which takes walkers into Wensley Dale.Nearest parking is in the 'Square' Wensley village. There is some roadside parking but care is needed to avoid obstruction.
The area village of Wensley and its associated dale is steeped in history associated with lead mining. It is believed that the Romans once mined the hillside. Lead mining ceased in the Late 1940's , exhausted seams and flooding contributed to the closures. Many of the coattages in the village where built for the mine workers. A one-time coaching in the Red Lion is now unoccuppied. At one time there were three public houses in the village, a shop and Post office, these all closed many years ago.
Stories abound relating the acivity of witches in the area and it is that thought that at one time the village was named Wodensly. The hillside above the dale is riddled with mine shafts and although these are capped it is inadvisable to stray from the marked footpaths. Cattle and sheep graze on the surrounding meadows which are full of wildflowers in the summer months. There are a number of waymarked footpaths in the area. Above Wensley dale is a line of trees, known locally as the 'Toothbrush'. Near to that vantage point is the Limestone Way a long-distance footpath, this can be followed to the west to the village of Winster.
Please be aware that livestock are often grazing and cattle with calves should be passed with caution. Dogs must be on a lead at all time
