Gates Canyon Road is one of two leading up to the top of the Vaca Mountains, a route many joggers and cyclists test themselves with regularly. The cache is well hidden near the intersection of Gates Canyon and Pleasants Valley roads.

* * *
Gates Canyon is named for local pioneer James W. Gates, who moved here with his wife Samantha in 1852. Their farm consisted of 200 acres of fruit trees, another 75 acres of general farmland and another 1,800 acres of grazing land.

James was a large stockholder and director of the Vacaville Fruit Growers' Association, and a prominent citizen in the area for many years.
