I have a lot of my history invested in this location, or in this area anyway. Growing up the family went to the church to the south, the First Presbyterian Church. I used to go the movies across the street. Emporia Main Street has changed so much. When I was working in Emporia one of the projects I was on was this structure. Joe Worley and I spent many days building the addition on this beautiful structure. I still have many fond memories of those days. Joe was an “old Marine” and would let you know about it if there was interest. He had lots of stories about the “Big” war. Most of the other guys thought Joe could be difficult. I enjoyed the grizzly old guy. He was a successful trap shooter and most people never knew it. I admired him for the way he was and things he did. There were some very funny times, and Joe did not always think it as humorous as I did but he put up with me. I could write a short book about him I guess. Very good times they were. The Pastor at that time was, Larry Valentine. Every day Larry was there and interested in what was going on. Of course he was a pastor and new little of the construction world, but he like Joe also and they seemed to enjoy each other’s stories. The Pastors office door could share some interesting tales if it could talk. There was one day Pastor Larry had to remind Joe where we were and that he should be more considerate of the language he was using. Of course Joe puckered right up and stopped the colorful cursing he was sharing. Another time I watched as Joe let his cigarette catch his glove on fire and burn his hand, he did not think I should laugh so hard and wondered why I did not warn him he was on fire. Man it was so funny. Later I built the cremaburyum on the East side of the building. This is a garden area where cremated congregation members ashes can be interred. This building is in my opinion one of the most attractive structures in Emporia. The brick used is still produced in Topeka, and I think it is called an over baked brick. There are several examples of its use around town.
Joe and Larry both died of cancer, I miss them both.

This cache marks the start and finish of things.

Not just life and death.
