In 1982 and developed by Alan McNeil, Atari released Berzerk for the Atari 2600. Per Wikipedia, Alan was an employee of Universal Research Laboratories (a division of Stern Electronics), had a dream one night involving a black-and-white video game in which he had to fight robots. This dream, with heavy borrowing from the BASIC game Robots, was the basis for Berzerk.

The player controls a green stick man, representing a humanoid. Using a joyskick (and a firing button to activate a laser-like weapon), the player navigates a simple maze filled with many robots, who fire lasers back at the player character. A player can be killed by being shot, by running into a robot or an exploding robot, coming into contact with the electrified walls of the maze itself, or by being touched by the player's nemesis, Evil Otto.

Cool facts: Berzerk which was named for Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series of science fiction novels and Evil Otto was named after Dave Otto, security chief at McNeil's former employer, Dave Nutting Associates.

The Atari 2600 is available for the PC. Stella (released for free under GNU Public License and available at http://stella.sourceforge.net/index.php) is one of the more popular (and stable) emulators out there. Atari 2600 games (including this one) are available legally for free from several websites including http://www.atariage.com.

I hope that you have enjoyed this piece of video gaming history and web resources should you decide to relive a memorable portion of your childhood.
