Geocache Description:

Located along the scenic Skyline Trail. Near this spot is a nice bench to take in the view of the nearby ravine or just take a break from the hike. Cache is regular in size with plenty of room for swag and trackables.

As I walk these trails in this great park, I can’t help but think that the mammoth frequented these grounds many years ago. Still waiting to find a tusk.

Here’s a little more information about the Woolley Mammoth

Woolly mammoths lived during the Pleistocene era which included numerous ice ages. They roamed the earth from 120 thousand years ago to as recently as 10 thousand years ago and inhabited regions of the earth including northern Europe, northern Eurasia, North America, and Siberia. The thick hair on the woolly mammoth was up to three feet long, dangling like fringe around the lower body and legs. Hair on the upper body was around 12 inches long with shorter hairs growing in a 3 inch thick undercoat next to the body giving the mammoth both protection from the harsh, bitter cold weather, and from saber toothed cats and other predators of their day. The tusks of a woolly mammoth were enormous curved spears of ivory that were often used for defense, to dig in snow for vegetation and to sweep the snow away from it's path. Males also tussled and "fenced" with rival bulls during breeding.

Daily or yearly park sticker required. Park hours are 6am-11pm. During cross-country ski season, please keep off the groomed trails. There is hunting allowed in parts of the park during the 9-day deer season at the end of November and a few days in the spring during turkey hunting. Just be aware of your surroundings.

Have fun!
