Geocache Description:

One of a series of simple, easy to find, caches at railway stations in and around the Manawatu.

Welcome aboard the WMR service to Wellington! Last stop Levin, next stop Ohau.

Weraroa Station was built where the Levin station now stands, to support the new town of Weraroa, a seperate town from Levin. Although the Levin and Weraroa stations were built about the same time, Weraroa grew quickly. For much of its life it had a larger population than Levin and this prompted much rivalry between the two towns. Weraroa Station provided service from 1886 until it was pulled out in 1894. However a new station was built here in 1909 when the Levin station was damaged by fire and demolished. This meant that Levin did not have a railway station and now Weraroa did, and even though it was called Levin Station this did much to bolster Weraroa's ego in the ongoing rivalry.
