FDR by Horse ─ O.K. Corral
hidden by: Joebids

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral took place October 26, 1881, in the town of Tombstone in the Arizona Territory which later became the state of Arizona. Possibly the most famous gunfight in the history of the Old American West, the gunfight is believed to have lasted less than one minute and involved only thirty gunshots. The gunfight happened during a time in history when the American West was open range for outlaws, as law enforcement had few lawmen to cover a vast frontier.

...Continued

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was a gunfight between several outlaw cowboys whose illegal activities were opposed by the town's Marshall, Virgil Earp. Virgil was assisted by his brothers, Morgan Earp and the famous Wyatt Earp. Doc Holliday also participated; before the fight, he was deputized as a temporary marshal by Virgil. In the gunfight, three of the outlaws were killed. On the lawmen's side, none were killed but three were wounded: Virgil and Morgan Earp as well as Doc Holliday. Only Wyatt Earp was unharmed.

At the time, the Gunfight was a local issue and few people outside the West took note of the event or its famous participants. However, after many references in books, novels, and movies to the people involved (especially Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday) as well as to the Gunfight itself, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral is known to almost everyone.

However, despite being named for the horse stable, the gunfight did not occur at the corral itself. It actually took place along the street and on a narrow lot a short distance from the O.K. Corral.
