Geocache Description:

This geocache was placed in preparation for the Going Caching 2013 Mega-Event at FDR State Park. We hope you enjoy riding the trails and caching in Georgia's largest State Park. Please sign the log book and rehide the container in the same location as you found it. If you take something from the geocache, leave something of equal or greater value.

FDR by Horse ─ Pony Express
hidden by: Joebids and Harborspy

The Pony Express Mail Service (April 1860 - October 1861) was a short-lived mail service operating between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California.

Mail was delivered by riders using a series of relay stations at which riders and fresh horses could be exchanged. The trail crossed the Great Plains as well as the Rocky and the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges.

Pony Express mail transit time was roughly ten days across the country and thus a valuable means of communication in the days before telegraph.

Cache Description:
So far along this trail, you have been retrieving and leaving items just as the Postal Courier riders of the Pony Express would have, all the while honing your skills to seek, find, retrieve and set the conditions for the next Pony Express Courier to come along.

Remember Your Creed:

Neither snow
nor rain
nor heat
nor lack of SWAG
stays these couriers
from the
swift completion
of their
appointed FINDS.

This is a Letterbox Geocache hidden on the Horse Trail. As you ride along the Trail, you will cross a creek and the cache you seek will be roughly 650 feet beyond that at the posted coordinates.   Again, remember the Creed and proudly ride to your completed find.

Please leave the Letterbox stamp and pad in the container for other Letterbox seekers.

~ Happy Trails!

The difficulty for the Geocaches in this series have been rated with the consideration of you being on a moving horse.

Please be careful when you retrieve, handle and replace the various containers.   If you should drop something to the ground, take direction from your Guide on whom in your group should retrieve the item. Of course this does not apply if you are on your own horse unguided.

This Geocache has been placed with kind permission from FDR State Park Management and is in accordance to agreed standards. It is also on a  designated Horse Trail  where no hiking on them is allowed.  You may bring your own horse or go on a guided ride from Roosevelt Riding Stables.  If you do bring your own horse, you still must register at the Stables office.

The Horse Trails are typically open from Tuesday through Sunday.  Please see their web page for operating days/hours, guidelines and Guided Trail Ride rates.   Roosevelt Riding Stables

NOTE -- There is a $5.00 parking fee per car to enter the State Park.  Of course you can purchase an annual pass which will give you unlimited access to all GA State Parks.
