FTF Honors-jeadons

Lighter pine, also referred to as fat lighter, fatwood, and lighter knot is derived from the heartwood of pine trees. The stump (and tap root) left in the ground after a tree has fallen or has been cut is an excellent source of lighter pine. This resin-impregnated heartwood becomes hard and rot-resistant and is an excellent means for starting a campfire. The container you're looking for is surrounded by a motherlode of lighter pine.

This site features historically significant fire rings from its days as a former Boy Scouts of America camping ground. The site provides preservation of ecologically sensitive habitats including coastal hammock, salt marshes and mangrove swamps. These natural communities provide habitat for a diversity of listed species including roseate spoonbill, white ibis and reddish egret. Preserve hours are sunrise to sunset.
