Geocache Description:

Cache placed by the National Trust to providing historc information on the site of Calor gas. Wheelchair/Stroller friendly but may need help to retrieve the cache

Where you can now see the Calor gas works was originally the site of the Dulais Forge built in about 1725 it was converted by William Llewllyn, the owner of the Upper Tinworks (Aberdulais Tinworks and Waterfall)  in 1845 in order to increase production of tinplate and was known as the Lower Works. If you look carefully you can see the pillars of the main entrance which have now been incorporated into the wall. As you can imagine the Railway tavern here was a favourite watering hole for the workers in the Lower Works before they set off home.

The road in front of you used to be the route of the Glyncorrwg Mineral Railway, more commonly known as Parson's Folly Tramroad. It linked the Blaen Cregan collieries and collieries on Cefn Morfudd with the Neath Canal and Tennant Canals at the Aberdulais Basin.  It believed to have  supplied the coal that fuelled the furnaces at both the Upper and Lower Aberdulais Tinworks.
