The greek Agora is the most ancient referent of the western public space, the predecessor of our squares. It was not only a market, but also the seat of government, a center of worship, a workspace and a venue for entertainment. But more than that, it was the birthplace of democracy and the space where intellectuals such as Socrates, Plato, Euripides, Sophocles, etc., discussed their ideas.
The Athenians could neutralize powerful citizens, thought to be a threat to democracy or a potential tyrant, by expelling them from the city-state for ten years. The procedure was a form of election called ostracism because they scratched the name of the person they wished to expel on pieces of broken pottery (ostraka). Thousands of such ostraka were found during excavations and are exhibited nowadays at the Museum of the Ancient Agora.
