Amelia is a beautiful and peaceful rural county in Virginia. The county was established in 1735 and named for the daughter of King George II. During the Revolutionary War the town was raided by General Tarleton in 1781.
During the American Civil War, Robert E. Lee encamped here on April 4,5 1865 during his retreat from Petersburg. Amazingly, the courthouse was saved by General George Armstrong Custer making Amelia one of the counties with the oldest surviving records in Virginia.
For those of you following Lee’s Retreat the geocache is located between Namozine Church and Jetersville battlefields along the route (which also passes near our farm). Here is a link to one of the many resources on Lee’s Retreat.
