This is a DIY hidden near but not on the Pilot Knob Lookout Tower.
There is ample parking at the tower access on US63 about 10 miles south of Rolla. You can clearly see the tower as you approach from either the north or the south. Pilot Knob, and the lookout tower, have been a local landmark for ages. The land for the tower was purchased by the Forest Service in 1953 from Judge Frank Landwehr of St. Louis under the agreement that it was to have a tower built on the site. The tower was constructed shortly afterward. It is still in occasional use and was used frequently when a forest fire roared through this area several years ago. Park at the gate and hike up the gravel road about .15 miles. It's short but steep! Enjoy the scenery. There are lots of deer and turkey in the woods and you might see one if you are observant. There is even a nearby picnic table in case you want to sit a spell or have lunch.
Thanks to the US Forest Service for permission to place this cache.
