A cemetery cache near a historically significant community in Oklahoma and Choctaw history.
This region was an attractive and logical stopping place for the Choctaw after their arduous trek from Mississippi. The first major group arrived near here at a "ration point" on the Mountain Fork River where food was issued, as required by the removal treaty. Christian missionaries such as Loring S. Williams and Cyrus Byington came at about the same time to organize churches, organize schools, establish a post office in 1834, and a written Choctaw language. There is a large marker near the entrance to the cemetery telling about Cyrus Byington.
Once the Choctaw recovered from the trauma of the "Trail of Tears," the area become a trading center for the much-traveled Military Trace. More information can be found online at digital.library.okstate.edu/encyclopedia.
Please be respectful of those who are buried here and their famililies and friends as you hunt for the cache and rplease eplace it as found so that many others may enjoy this cache and interesting historical cemetery.
