Border Ridge – The Refuge Traditional Cache

Northumbria biker: Mod have now confirmed that geocaches are not acceptable on any of their land and any already there must be removed. Their letter to GAGB includes the following -

"As discussed at the meeting, the MOD are unable to give permission for any physical geocache to be placed anywhere on the MOD freehold/leasehold estate (referred to here after as the owned estate). Whilst the MOD does operate a presumption in favour of public access on its estate, when compatible with military operations and training, we do not consider physical geocaches to be acceptable."

Geocache Description:


The English – Scottish border in Northumberland runs for some 30 miles along the ridge of the Cheviot Range with some summits reaching 2,000 ft. The Border Ridge also constitutes the final section of the Pennine Way (if you’re going South to North). Almost all the English side is within the Northumberland National Park.

This short series covers the section from the small Mountain Refuge hut, erected by National Park rangers, NE to the summit of Mozie Law about 2 miles away. The route is on a bridleway so biking is permitted and challenging.

This is typical Pennine moorland, bleak, peaty and often windswept. The ridge is, at minimum, 2 miles of rough walking away to the nearest habitation and often a lot more. It follows that mountain equipment and mountain skills are essential when venturing up here and that normal safety precautions should be taken. As recently as 2013, three mountain marathon runners were trapped overnight in the Refuge by a blizzard. Surprisingly there is a mobile signal in many places. The going is often boggy but considerable sections of the route have been paved.

For those walking or running the Pennine way, these 4 caches require only very short deviations from the path. For those coming from the English side access is best either up the path from Blindburn or up The Street from Slymefoot. In both cases parking is available. From the Scottish side paths go up from Buchtrig and from the road-end above Hownham.

This one will take you to the Mountain Refuge. Feel free to look inside, it’s never locked. A good place to shelter from the rain or have lunch
