Atkins-Johnson Museum Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Trekkie79: Stopped by today and removed the container before the bulldozers do it! Hopefully once the construction is done I'll be able to find a new location for this nice container. Unfortunately there was no trackable in the cache

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Atkins-Johnson Farm and Museum

This house is one of the oldest continuously lived in homes in Clay county. The house was built between 1824 and 1830 and was occupied until 2004. John Hightower built the original two story log home. He sold it to Jonathan Atkins in 1830. In 1833, Jonathan gave one acre to Big Shoal Church. Jonathan expanded the house into an I-frame between 1850 and 1860. It was sold in 1904 to Rudolph Schroeder, then in 1920 to Mary Johnson. Natural gas was installed in the 1950's. An indoor bathroom was added in the early 1960's. The kitchen was the last addition to the house. The house is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house opened as a museum on April 27, 2013.  Museum hours are 11-4 Wednesday through Saturday.  There is a nominal fee to visit the museum.

The cache is available 24/7 and does not require entering the museum or crossing the gate when the road is closed.
