ST JAMES, AB KETTLEBY


A Roman mosaic and pavement were found beneath the present churchyard, indicating the presence of a villa.

Ab Kettleby was first recorded in the Domesday Book as Chetelbi.

St. James Church has a Norman font, and a memorial to Everard Digby of the Gunpowder Plot. The remains of the villa, and a ditch running from north to south underneath the nave have caused serious structural problems for the church.

I was struck by the peaceful setting, the beautiful views and the very rural feel to this village. I did some exploring whilst here and found the natural spring well (nearby, close to the duck pond) and was tempted to use the colourful dates on the Chapel and Sunday school, (on Chapel Lane, and where I parked) to turn this into a multi.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHURCH IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING MAJOR STRUCTURAL REPAIRS, YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE CHURCHYARD. THE CACHE IS STILL ACCESSIBLE USING THE FIELD GATE AT THE SIDE OF THE CHURCH.
