INDIGO
Pure Indigo has an RGB value of 111-000-255 and a Hex value of 6F00FF.
Indigo is a bit of a mystery in the rainbow, in fact many countries refuse to believe it is a colour as such, just a shade of blue - they insist on there being six colours in the rainbow. But Isaac Newton believed there were seven - he did love the number seven, that's for sure - so we will stick with tradition!
Indigo is named after the plant, and the dye that came from it. After centuries of war and conflict the British dominated the trade in the dye by the late Victorian era - it was cheaper and easier to make, and more versatile, than the old 'wode' method of making a pale blue. The chief people to suffer from the British dominance were the Dutch, so perhaps it is fitting that it was a Dutch company (BASF) that invented a man-made version, which was even cheaper and longer-lasting than the British (Indian and Jamaican) dye, and wiped out the British trade within 20 years.
