Some 1400m along the Sleeping Beauty trail, this natural mountain formation can be seen. It is often missed by hikers who are so intent on the trail and their footing that they miss the greater picture round about them. This mountain is appropriately named SITTING MONK. It is only seen when hiking towards Sleeping Beauty cave. On the trip back, unless a person is really observant whilst looking back, it is missed altogether.
There is parking available at the Garden Castle Office and Camp Site area. There is a nominal entrance fee as this is part of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park. However Wild and Rhino card holders have free access. All hikers need to register in the hiking register at the Garden Castle offices.
There is a short walk from the parking area to the start of the trail which is the first waypoint given. After hiking some 1,3 kms from the elavated bridge and start of the trail, the first siting of the SITTING MONK is experienced. The trail is not arduous, and this first view of the SITTING MONK occurs when the trail rises quite high above the river, where the gorge narrows.
You are nearing the SITTING MONK POOLS cache. This cache is a small plastic clip lock container, and is placed between the trail and the river. Below the cache site is a large flattish rock, where a welcome break, tea, or lunch can be enjoyed. From this rock a number of pools can be seen. They are hidden from the path, so this is an ideal place to cool off, in absolute private, before resuming your hike. Hence the name of the cache - SITTING MONK POOLS.
The container contains a log sheet, pencil, and some SWAG items, and is big enough for Geocache Coins or small TB's.
Further along the trail, about 300m is the second Sitting Monk cache, called SITTING MONK - RIVER CROSSINGS. GC4B160.
Both of these caches are before the steep ascent to Sleeping Beauty and Engagement caves, where there is another cache "Sleeping Beauty Cave" GC2132Q. And for the really fit beyond that cache is another "The Ridges and Valleys" GC2YYVR.. Both the caves and the caches are worth the extra hike.
