Welcome to the concrete campus of the Georgia State Panthers!
Celebrating its centennial anniversary this year, Georgia State University has been a staple of downtown Atlanta for 100 years now.
This cache takes you across the "main" campus of Atlanta's most-attended post-secondary institution. GSU was founded in 1913 as an evening school for the Georgia Institute of Technology. After several different affiliations within the University System of Georgia, it stood alone as Georgia State College in 1961 and became Georgia State University in 1969. The school officially became the state's fourth "research university" in 1995. Courses in over 250 fields of study, and 52 accredited degrees are offered.
GSU sponsors 16 NCAA Division I teams, including a football team that began play in 2010 and joined the FBS in 2013. The school also hosts 29 fraternities and sororities. Today, over 32,000 students attend GSU including over 8,000 postgraduates. The campus has continued to expanded over the past five decades, with construction of new buildings and the acquisition of other properties, such as the 26 story SunTrust Tower. You can't walk around downtown without seeing the GSU logo somewhere. Because of this urban sprawl, GSU has gained the nickname "the concrete campus."
The starting coordinates take you to the main courtyard on campus. Depending on the time of day, this place could be jam-packed! Luckily what you need here will not be comprised by muggles. Carefully count the number of paw prints on the ledge that surrounds the fountains. Make sure you count around both of the fountains. You should have a two digit number where the first digit represents A and the second represents B. Solve for the coordinates:
N 33° 4B.(B-4) (A-1) (B+3)
W 084° 23.(A-B-3) (B-4) (A-7)
The second stage will bring you to a plaque located below the school's mascot. On what anniversary was this statue donated? Take the two digits in that number and subtract them. This is C. Take the day that it was dedicated and add the two digits together. This is D. Take the second digit of the year it was dedicated and this is E. Solve for the coordinates:
N 33° 4B.EAC
W 084° 23.(B-D) D (B+C)
The final stage will require stealth to both retrieve and replace. The container is not fully waterproof so trade items should only be left if they can get wet. The log should stay dry, but BYOP in case the pencil left will not cooperate. Please do NOT force the lid back on too tight. It will lock the container and then the next finder will not be able to open the cache.
I hope you enjoyed your trip around the concrete campus as much as I enjoyed bringing you here. I attended GSU from 2004-2009 and have many great memories of this place!
GO PANTHERS!
