Hamilton's Pipeline trail
Hamilton pipeline was built 150 years ago from the pump house on Woodward Street. It was designed to carry a million gallons of water daily to the old reservoir next to the present day Kenilworth access. Huge steam engines at the pump house pushed the water the 5 kilometer route. The underground pipeline was used for 80 years before the pump house was decommissioned. The original plan was to pump water straight from the harbour but a gent by the name of Thomas Keefer ( a noted engineer of the time) had the foresight to suggest otherwise. He reasoned that the newly formed city of Hamilton would continue to grow and likely be putting waste in the harbour. This foresight gave the new growing city access to clean drinking water. Today the pipeline trail is used by many for a stroll or for walking the dog.
