Sea otters can be seen at the Slough, in open water or hanging out on the mudflats and the dock at the beginning of the Elkhorn Slough at Moss Landing. Sea otters are fuzzy creatures that have more between 500,000 to 1 million hairs per square inch on their bodies which keeps them warm in the cold water. They also have a layer of blubber. Sea otters eat many different foods: clams, crabs, oysters, abalone, etc. Sea otters are one of the few animals that use tools such as rocks to help open clams. The Sea otters that you see are protected under California state law. Sea otters are a marine mammal favorite. Scientific Name: Enhydra lutris Family: Mustelidae Habitat: Open salt water and surrounding areas in the bay to the slough Information cited from: http://www.elkhornslough.org/
