Geocache Description:

Beggar’s Lane connects Bullers Green (at the top of Newgate Street) with Cottingwood Lane.

It is used by students from KEVI high school as a shortcut to and from Cottingwood Lane, which leads up to the school.  (It may therefore be best to avoid visiting this one at peak times around the start and end of the school day).

The lane slopes down to the footbridge over the Cottingburn at the bottom and quite steeply up again on the other side to Cottingwood Lane. The footbridge itself dates from the 18th century and is a Grade II listed building.

NB: The steeper side can be slippery in the depths of winter.  (In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, it used to be possible, with a reasonable amount of snow on the ground, to throw down one’s school bag, sit on it and ‘sledge’ down to the bottom! – This is NOT a recommendation, just a vague memory of bygone days… :-) )
