The cache is located in the Murray Sunset National Park best accessed from the Mallee Highway along the Pink Lakes road which is gravel and 2WD friendly. The container is of medium size with a pencil and a log book.
The Pink Lakes are spectacular flats with the salt being pink in colour. The colour is due to species of red algae on top of the salt. The salt was mined commercially from 1916 to 1979 when the area was declared as a national park. During mining there was a small town and a school established on the shores of the lakes. The salt was transported away using camels. The 50.700ha park was incorporated into the Murray Sunset Park in 1991. The combined area became the second largest park in Victoria. The vegetation around the lakes is specialised and highly salt tolerant. The flowers around the lakes are spectacular particularly during spring time. Kangaroos abound. Bird life includes the White-fronted Chats. A nice area to have a picnic but watch out for feral bees on hot dry days as they are attracted by any moisture including sweat, food and drinks. The area is remote and good supplies of fuel, water and maps are essential.
