David Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Stonagal: Time marches on, and after moving away to Alberta, I’m moving again to Ottawa. I don’t suppose I’ll be around here even as often as in the last 2.5 years, so it’s time I retrieve this one. The purple martins still reside here in large number, and David is still birding. This one had a great run over the past five years. Thanks to all who stopped here!

Geocache Description:

This cache is named for and placed in honour of my friend David, the one who unintentionally got me into geocaching.

In October 2010, I accompanied a group of people looking for a geocache on an island in a lake (GC29ZQ1). After boating and hiking, we easily made the find. I came home, made a GC.com account and logged it as found. It was all a lot of fun, and I thought I would really enjoy this sport. In fact, I thought I would enjoy it so much it might take over my life! As I was still in school, I decided not to get into it yet and make sure I worked at finishing my studies diligently.

Two years later I served as a Christian missionary in Sierra Leone for a month, with a team from across Canada.  David, from Ontario, was one of the others on our team. David is an avid birder, and whenever we had spare time he would grab his binoculars and field manual and head out to see which new and exciting birds he could catch a glimpse of. By the time we were finished, he had seen more than 75 new birds! I joined him on a few of his adventures. It was exciting to glimpse a bird, look for distinctive features about it, check it against his field manual, and mark off one more that we had seen. It reminded me of the excitement I felt when I had found that geocache two years prior, and I decided to take up geocaching when I got home from Africa in August 2012.

So it is that I have placed this cache near the world’s largest purple martin tower, in David’s honour. I don’t know anything about purple martins, but I’m sure David could teach you if you wanted to know. The tower features 576 “apartments” for the birds.
