This cache was originally placed in 2013 as part of the Washington State Parks Centennial GeoTour - "100 caches in 100 parks to celebrate 100 years" - cosponsored by Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA).
Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park is a 4,027-acre camping park with 73,640 feet of freshwater shoreline at the foot of Dry Falls. Dry Falls is one of the great geological wonders of North America. Carved by Ice Age floods that long ago disappeared, the former waterfall is now a stark cliff, 400 feet high and 3.5 miles wide. In its heyday, the waterfall was four times the size of Niagara Falls. Today it overlooks a desert oasis filled with lakes and abundant wildlife.
This cache is located in the basin below Dry Falls in the heart of the park and is just off a portion of the Caribou Trail close to trailhead parking. The Caribou Trail is an historic pioneer trail that at one time ran for more than 800 miles, following a natural north-south passage through this area. The route was used for centuries by Indians and later on by Hudson's Bay Company fur brigades that were packing pelts from Canada. Shortly after the last brigade in 1846, prospectors began drifting through, panning for gold. Big strikes near Barkerville, BC produced a rush in the early 60's to feed the hungry miners. Cowboys drove thousands of cattle along the trail to the gold fields until the last drive in 1868.
