Onondaga Cave State Park
The park's visitor center contains displays and exhibits that showcase Missouri as the Cave State and explain the significance of Onondaga Cave. During the summer season, nature programs are held for park visitors, including tours of the other spectacular cave in the park, Cathedral Cave.
Picnic areas near the Meramec River, which borders the park, and an open picnic shelter that can be reserved make the park a great place for family gatherings. More than six miles of hiking trails are available, and the river provides opportunities for swimming, fishing and canoeing. The park's newly renovated campground opened in April 2004 and offers electric/water campsites as well as basic campsites with concrete pads.
Oak Ridge Trail #1
The Oak Ridge Trail is a 3.0 mile loop, with an estimated hiking time of 2 hours & 15 minutes to complete. There are 3 geocaches hidden along this trail.
This hilly, natural trail is of moderate difficulty with one wet-weather stream crossing and some trailside drop offs. A few wet-weather waterfalls in a ravine on the north end of the loop are a bonus during rainy weather. A large, south facing dolomite glade is an interesting change from the shaded forest trail. Chinquapin oak, fragrant sumac, buckthorn, bluestem and switch grasses are present. Yellow coneflower, orange pucoon and Indian paint brush add a splash of color.
Blazes = Red – Follow Red Tags to stay on the trail.
This area has very thick covering so it's hard to get a steady gps signal. Look for a large fallen tree that stretches across the creek. As you stand looking at the roots of the fallen tree, turn around and you'll see a big rock on the hill next to the trail. Check the rock! No bushwhacking required.
This cache is a small green military matchstick holder. Only enough room for a log, so bring your own Pen or Pencil to sign log.
FTF Honors go to MOQ's Congratulations!
Trailhead is located at north end of campground amphitheater parking area.
Plenty of parking available.
