Geocache Description:

The Tri-Cities is spread out below as you look at the vista from 2,200 feet of altitude. It makes for a very impressive view at night. You will also get good views of the new Vestas wind generators on the drive up, as well as when you get to the top of the hill. Don't forget to bring your binoculars.

Why antennacache you ask? The cache location is on top of Joe Butte, and it's a literal antenna farm up here. There's everything from tiny 2" tall 800 Mhz quarter-waves, to the mighty 100,000 watt ERP (Effective Radiated Power) antenna on KVEW TV channel 25 in the building towards the West end. Most long distance phone lines and ISP connections head out in every direction on GTE's big tower which bristles with large up-firing microwave dishes. State police, fire dept, sheriff, public safety channels, paging transmitters, TV and FM stations, commercial two-way radios, etc., all have antennas sprouting from the towers and transmitters in buildings below to run them all. During a power outage, you will hear every kind of engine running, including large diesel power plants as backup generators kick in.

The terrain is a level 2.5 since the family car will have to make a hard climb towards the last part of the gravel access road. The roads are all gravel. Be careful driving, and stick to the right side on blind curves. Radiomuggles sometimes drive like madmen on the way back to the shop after a long day of radio site work. (including me) Especially after driving up and down that road 900 times. Also beware of road graders, which can often be working up there during weekdays keeping the washboard minimal. Walking around is easy enough after you're up there, but watch for snakes in the summertime.
