Geocache Description:

You are looking for a preform tube. It replaced a camo'd container, formerly containing peanut butter. That's an ochre colored substance, perfect for this old ochre mine area, isn't it?

Lexington Paint Mine conservation area consists of 48 acres, 2.3 miles of trails. This is an interesting little conservation area connecting with Burlington Landlocked Forest on one end, and Simonds Brook Conservation area on the other, both containing numerous geocaches. The Lexington Conservation Lands trail maps may be helpful to you.

Paint Mine hosts its namesake feature, a natural ochre deposit that historically provided pigment for paint. Today the old ochre mine is still visible on the property. Other prominent features include a 10 acre meadow called Hennessey Field, an old stone foundation, and a series of small ponds that were built during the 1930s to trap muskrats. After their abandonment in the 1950s, these ponds have slowly been reverting to boglike conditions.

If you follow the trails from the suggested parking, and take the more circuituous route, you will find many nice new boardwalks. This cache is located near the longest one, one of the longest I've come across geocaching around here. I counted nearly 1000 2x8' planks! I didn't notice any muskrat ponds though, because I was looking down counting planks!

Congratulations to sloth96 on the FTF!
