Geocache Description:

Thanks to the forty-nine geochachers and friends who helped The Outdoor Classroom clean up the abandoned farm equipment from our meadow!  This cache overlooks the valley where volunteers labored to drag heavy metal "things" up a very steep hill!  Access is relatively easy, although thorns can be a nuisance!

This cache can be "trail and error" or "over hill and dale," depending on where your device takes you and your knowledge of the area.  Keep in mind you are in a township park and should be respectful of the park's trails and habitats.  You are looking for a traditional ammo can cache.  There may be Multi-Flora Rose or Poison Ivy in the vicinity - be careful!

The location of the cache is significant because of its relationship to the now-closed and demolished Mayview State Hospital.  Once an extremely large farm used to feed the patients and staff of the hospital, this property has been affected by human occupation dating back to the time of the Native Americans.  Evidence of more recent human impact comes in the form of the dumped materials cleaned up by willing volunteers and other items peeking out of the ground along the "Impact Trail."  Your search should have little impact on the terrain unless you aren't careful.

The Outdoor Classroom is a non-profit environmental education facility located in Upper St. Clair's Boyce Mayview Park.  Encompassing 475 acres of forests, fields and wetlands, visitors can utilize the twelve miles of hiking trails to study the vast variety of natural habitats.  Birders will be happy to know that over two hundred species of birds have been seen within the confines of the park, including a Blue Heron rookery!  The park is open daily from dawn until dusk and welcomes families from all over southwestern Pennsylvania to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors!

The Outdoor Classroom has programs for nature lovers of all ages!  From the very popular "Moonstruck: Full Moon Hikes" to "Amazing Insects" and everything in between, school groups, scouts and families return time after time to the this natural jewel just a few miles from downtown Pittsburgh.  Complete program descriptions are available on the website, www.TheOutdoorClassroomPA.org.  But the beauty of Nature never closes!  Bring your GPS, camera and binoculars and hike the trails any day of the year.  More than twenty caches in the park are sure to whet your interest!
