Geocache Description:

The given coords bring you to parking next to the Joy Family Burying Ground, a little cemetery with an interesting history.

The story: When the surrounding farm was conveyed to Alfred T. Joy in 1870, "all (the farm) except for one burial lot and fenced by a stone wall is reserved for any and all of the Joy family." Sarah E. Griffiths, a relative of the Joy family, had planned to be buried in the Joy Family Burying Ground. Over the years and for reasons unknown, Sarah and her sister, Nancy Fesler, grew to dislike each other very much. Upon Sarah's death, Nancy opposed her sister's burial in the family plot on the grounds that she did not have a plot. Sarah, in her will, had provided the funds for her own burial, but had not secured an actual plot within the cemetery. She had also authorized the expenditure of three thousand dollars (a very large sum in those days) "for the purpose of erecting a suitable monument and for otherwise improving and fitting up the lot." A lawsuit was filed by Nancy to prevent Sarah from being buried in this cemetery, but eventually the lawsuit was unsuccessful because the burial ground was reserved for any and all of the Joy family.

A spot for the suitable monument was selected by family members. The monument was erected and was the most expensive and ornate monument in the cemetery. To memorialize the words from Sarah's will, one grave marker has the following intriguing inscription: "A Suitable Monument and Fit Up the Lot". The stone with that inscription also has a hand inscribed, and the hand points towards the Griffiths monument, a suitable monument. All residual monies from Sarah's estate were spent on improvements to the burial ground, per Sarah's wish.
