***Congratulations to JATLink for FTF!***

Lake Antrim was created in 1869 when the Mahwah River was dammed creating a 26 acre flood. In January 1933, the village paid $15,000 for the corner lot on the banks of Lake Antrim, at Washington and Wayne Avenues. Suffern established its first park, creating a beach and recreation area. Sand was trucked in, a dock was built, and a lifeguard was assigned during the summer season. A playground was installed, and recreation programs were offered to village children. Trees were planted in the park, including some with stone tablets bearing names of residents killed in World War I. It was a popular haven during the summer months. This changed in July 1953, when thruway crews began cutting down the trees in the park. The swimming area was obliterated by huge piles of stone that were used in preparation for the bridge. More information about the Village of Suffern can be found in the book "Images of America: Suffern" by Craig H. Long
