"Puzbie's Flying Warehouses" is our first geocache, so we hope you like it. We've designed it to be a nice walk with a decent forage at the end. The route takes in some nice woodland and a lovely stroll along the Basingstoke canal. This can get muddy at times so boots would be advised. The walk should take about an hour to get all the clues and find the cache, and makes a nice circular walk back to your car.
The cache itself is a fairly large tupperware container. I have filled it with the following:
- A paperback book.
- 1 popular music CD
- 1 frankly unknown music CD
- a pink webcam (it does work, too!)
- A bag of wildlife seeds
- The Shrunken Shatner Travel Bug - a new travel bug for a new cache.
Plus the usual notebook and pen.
Basically, we've put in all the sort of stuff I used to see when I first started geocaching a few years back. So we thought we would go old school and create caches containing interesting or unusual objects. Please bear this in mind if you want to do the swapsie part of the cache. Bring something interesting or unusual with you!
The cache is in 6 stages. The first 5 stages each reveal a number A - E, which together provide the final coordinates. A lot of the course is in woodland, so your GPS may give fairly erratic readings. Because of this, I have given the location of all five stages as waypoints.
First,we are visiting the corner of the woods. You are going to:
Start: N51 17.961 W000 40.676
There is parking available nearby, just by the bridge.
On the way to this location, you will come across either a small valley or a large ditch, depending on your point of view. There is a swing here, which held my weight, so will probably hold yours.
Assuming you haven't brained yourself on the swing, you should STOP! I've decided to remove this section, as a cacher had an unpleasant experience with an over-zealous Network SW Employee who incorrectly accused them of tresspassing. All you need to know is this:
A = 1
Now we need to go here:
Fence: N 51° 17.940 W 000° 40.823
Looking at the fence, you will see some metal structures on the other side. One of them is a cabinet, next to a small hut. The cabinet has a four digit number on it: 482B
Ok, that's number B sorted out.
Now you need to go past (NOT across) the bridge and carry on up the path through the woods, until you reach:
Bridge: N 51° 17.915 W 000° 41.294
You will see a sign containing the number C: C / 95
Now go across the bridge, and follow the road through the houses until you reach:
Footpath: N 51° 18.041 W 000° 41.698
If the gate across the road is closed, you can use the footgate next to it. Please note that though this is a public footbpath, you are walking very close to people's gardens, and occasionally they have livestock. So keep your dog on a lead at this point, if you have one.
Once you are on the canal footpath, go to the lock at:
Lock: N 51° 17.984 W 000° 41.271
Here you will see a 2 digit number. Add the digits together to get D.
If you cannot find the number, bear in mind the cache route has changed, and you would originally have approached this lock from the opposite direction...
Continue along the canal for a well earned rest:
Bench: N 51° 17.989 W 000° 41.108
Once you've had a nice sit down and looked at the ducks, you need to have a tiny look around. To find E, work out what decade was Janie born in.
NB: for instance, if her DOB was 1952 then she would be born in decade 5.
You now have all the numbers, and can go and get your booty.
Booty: N 51° 17.D(C+E+2)D-1 W 000° 40.(D-A)A(B-3)
A final note: please practice Cache In - Trash Out if you can. Bring a bag with you as there are a few empty bottles and the like on the trail. I cleared a bagful when I placed the cache, but if we all do it then the area will look really nice, and be a nice advert for geocaching. I've included a few empty bags in the cache, so you have no excuse!
Any comments gratefully appreciated. We plan to do more geocaches so welcome any pointers from the knowledgeable.
Congratulations go to IceColdUK for being FTF!
