The Old and The New!

Sayville's post office opened on March 22nd 1837 and until the towns people had gathered together to name the Post Office the town of Sayville hadn't had a name. It had been informally known as "over south".
During this meeting to decided the name Edwardsville and Greensville tied in a vote, but one person has suggested Seaville as the name, which was their final decision. The town clerk at the time was unsure of how to spell sea so he returned home and looked in the Bible. The Bible he used for reference was an old edition from England, which spelled Sea and Say. Therefore he sent the request for the town to be called Sayville to DC.
When the town realized the mistake they protested the name and asked for it to be renamed Seaville. The Postmaster General at the time refused though, stating there were already many Seavilles but no Sayvilles. Therefore the name stayed. Some of the old Bibles from then even had the town name spelled as Saville.

The coordinates posted will take you to the location where the original Post Office stood. The building which is still there looks a lot like it had back when it was first build. Before this building had been built mail had been collected at a residence house and then transported to Babylon for distribution. It is said that the towns people were so happy to have the new Post Office that they actually threw a dancing party at its location. The post office outgrew its size in 1962 and was then moved to its current location on Greene Avenue.
