Drunken Lullabies
James H. Dearing, an Army officer in the War of 1812, came to Tuscaloosa as a merchant, staying in a nasty hovel that passed for a hotel at the corner of what is now Fourth Street and 27th Avenue.
It was there on Christmas morning of 1816 that he concocted the first eggnog ever consumed in this city. Later he said he had a right to make merry as a pioneer in a wilderness thick with Indians.
He also made a fortune here, first as a storeowner, then as a planter; he used his money to build a mansion at the intersection of University Boulevard and Queen City Avenue. Now known as the University Club, it has seen its share of spirits at holidays and other occasions.
Dearing, however, did not enjoy his new home for long. The spoiled, unruly students at the university, whom many considered even then the scourge of the town, threw rocks at his windows, stole his chickens, serenaded his family with drunken lullabies, broke down his gate and finally threatened him with firearms. Dearing shot one of them in self-defense; after the incident, he decided it best to sell his house and move further away from campus. He would rather send his son to "a distant college" than to the University of Alabama, he wrote to the local newspaper.
To locate the final gather information from the story of James Dearing.
