The stairway to Heaven.
The Okinoshima islands are not so very well known amongst the Japanese people who reside on the main island of Honshu. It is hidden out in the sea of Japan and is a very beautiful, if not well travelled, destination . Amongst this group of islands rests Chiburi-jima, the smallest of the 4. It takes about 2 hours to get there by ferry boat from Shichirui port in Shimane prefecture. Chiburi-jima, which has been said to be 'The Island Where You Can Hear the Heartbeat of the Earth', is also famous for 'tanuki' or 'racoons' so you will find many cute, bear-like statues depicting these rascally animals scattered about. With a population totaling about 500, Chibu village has the appearance and atmosphere of having stepped back in time and walking right into an old-fashioned fishing town...which...you are! You can't help but feel as if you are in some old movie about a travelling salseman where everyone stops for moment and greets you as you pass by. Take the time to walk around, greet the folks, enjoy the views and pay your respects to those who have preceeded us from this unique, although remote, cache location.
