Geocache Description:

This little known stone is marked by groves on the north side resembling the sun and its rays. It is the source of the name Kalama’ula (red rays), an area of south Molokai.

1920 Congress passed the Hawaiian Homes commission Act to provide lands for Hawaiians. In 1925 Kalama’ula became the first Hawaiian homestead subdivision in the islands. The story goes that the first residents wanted to get rid of the stone, it being right in their driveway, but a sledgehammer couldn’t break it. Then years later county workmen tried to blow it up with dynamite (hole still visible) as it was in the way of a proposed road, but this too was impossible.

The legend tells of a beautiful daughter of an ali’i (royalty) who fell in love with a commoner and would meet him secretly at this stone. One night the girl went to the stone and fell asleep while waiting for her young man who never showed. She was awakened by the rosy rays of the rising sun and realized her lover would never come. She declared that the stone must remain there forever and immediately the five red rays burned themselves permanently into the stone. Thus it is sacred, a place of power.
This legend can be found in TALES OF MOLOKAI, the voice of Harriet Ne, 1992.
