Geocache Description:

Every major clan in the New Territories clan has an ancestral hall. The main ancestral hall of the Liu clan of Sheung Shui, the Man Shek Tong, is a particularly fine example of this type of building. It was built before 1751, the date of the earliest inscription in the hall, restored in 1891, and again in 1985 when it was declared a historical monument.

The name Man Shek (Ten Thousand Bushels) is believed to refer to the clan founders who were high government officials. They received 10,000 bushels of rice as their salary.

The hall, like most of the major New Territories ancestral halls, is a "three-by-three" (三進式建築) design with three transverse gabled halls, separated by two courtyards. Each of the halls is divided into three sections. The decoration is austere, but fine. Three altars are for the ancestral spirits of the high clan ancestors (the central altar), those who paid for the construction or reconstruction of the hall (the left-hand altar) and those who have brought honour to the clan.

The clan still worships its ancestors here every year.
