Geocache Description:

Was there really an "Al Tahoe" at one time?

This cache is placed in the Al Tahoe neighborhood, site of the original pioneer settlement on the south shores of Lake Tahoe. Here, the Washoe made summer camps in the woods by the lake. The seekers of gold and silver passed through, finding food and shelter at a mid-19th century way station (hotel) that was the initial “record” on the shoreline of Tahoe. This hotel, located on the meadow end of Alameda Street, finally was established as Rowland’s Lake House and Station and eventually gave way to a little settlement attracting cattlemen, loggers and woodcutters, commercial fishermen and summer vacationers. It wasn’t until 1907, when Almerin (Al) and Almira (also Al) Sprague built their substantial hotel (with swimming pool and tennis courts) on Sacramento Street a few blocks to the east, did the place name “Al Tahoe” become established on property in the area. Frank and Esther Globin took over the large neighborhood holding in the mid-1920’s. Some of the smaller cabins (made of brick) that were part of the Globin complex still remain as residences. The conclusion of World War II opened the door to wholesale land development at Al Tahoe as good roads and prosperity brought people eager to spend summers at the lake. When this cemetery was created in the mid-1800s, it was all by itself. Now it is surrounded by residences. The sign lists the names of those eternally residing here—notice the same names mentioned above? The cemetery is maintained by the Boys Scouts of America #494 and records are kept at the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, nearby on Lake Tahoe Boulevard, next to the Senior Center and Tourist office. The coordinates will get you to the general cache location. Staying outside the fence, you must locate the headstone of the person born in 1826 and died in 1907 and from there find the cache.
