Geocache Description:

Small container hidden within the courtyard of Snyder Hall in honor of 52 years of the Dial-a-Carol program.  Please be respectful of the students who are living there during the academic year.

Dial-a-Carol is a traditional program initiated in Snyder Hall in 1960. The program was started by a group of students living on the second floor of Snyder Hall who wanted to spread the holiday cheer and spirit throughout the building during December. With the help of the Area Secretary at the time, Betty Gordon, the group came up with the idea of Dial-a-Carol where anyone in the building could call a number and listen to a Christmas carol over the phone during the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign’s fall semester final week. Over years, the program evolved so that it could receive calls not only from within Snyder Hall, but now around the world! The program has also expanded so that the songs now include pieces from different holidays celebrated during the season. Despite the development and changes which have happened over the history of Dial-a-Carol, the program’s intention has remained the same: spreading holiday cheer while providing an outlet for students to relax and have fun during finals week.

During the Fall semester finals week in December, feel encouraged to call
217-332-1882 and request a carol to be song to you over the phone.  This is an opportunity for students to spread some holiday cheer during the last week of school.  Please don't be a "grinch" and troll the students answering the phones as they are only trying to spread positivity during the season.  Thanks!
