My parents referred to this section of old roadway as devils elbow. According to them this road was a beast to navigate in snowy conditions in an era when rear wheel drive vehichles was the norm. My mother believes the elbow was beyond the bridge (which is now under water) at the bottom of the hill which prevented drivers from getting a "run" at the hill. I personally have never driven or rode on this road since it was probably closed around 1969. Two Lick reservoir was built by the Homer City Power Plant for cooling purposes & their generators went online in 1969. I found a map dated 1967 that shows 422 following this old route. So it was probably still in use at least up until 1967. In the late 1990's or early 2000's around Christmas time me and my brothers hiked this old roadway. There was a severe drought that caused Two Lick reservoir to be a mere stream in places. That drought caused the old bridge to be partially exposed and me & my brothers actually walked out on part of it. The thing that sticks out in my mind about our jouney that day was an engine block setting on the bridge & we wondered how it ever got there. If anyone else knows any history or has any experiences on this old roadway feel free to post about it.
