Don't be put off by the D/T level for this cache as it is on fairly level footpaths. The difficulty is high because of the number of animals you have to find in the dark! It is very dark, though, and the path can get very muddy (at times), slippery, squelchy and there are many roots and pot holes. There is only a very slight incline at one point! This is an easy 5/4!!!!!
Well Woods is a lovely place to walk during the day. But, after dark the place shelters Creepy Crawley animals!!!
There are 7 different animals, each hiding at a different station! Plus the final cache. Please don't spoil it for others by removing any of the animals as we've had to replace them several times!!! Thanks...
The total distance is about 1 mile and should take the slowest about 1½ hours. We walked the circuit in 40 minutes but we knew where the animals were hiding
.
You need a bright, focusable flashlight and spare batteries to follow the night tacks through the woods and for best results........YOU NEED A GOOD TORCH HELD AT EYE LEVEL FOR BEST VISIBILITY and don’t forget to have spare batteries on you!!
The coding is simple.
- Single orange tacks guide you around the series and in to the cache and double orange tacks guide you back out to the start.
- Single, triangular white tacks together with an orange indicate the animal is close by.
Coords will be found on the animal to take you to the next station. Make a note of what’s needed for the bonus cache! The magnetic animals are attached to orange firetacks which will help you find the right spot to put them back in the dark!!! Please make sure the animal covers the firetack when you put it back. Following the night tacks, go to the given coords (usually a clearing) and stand and look around you for the signs of a creepy crawley hiding nearby! The animal will be very close to the white one!
Follow the footpaths at all times while following the trail. There will be no need to go bushwhacking as there are plants, brambles, thorns etc. Most of the critters can be found close-ish to the footpath.
The exception to this is for the final cache where you will have to leave the footpath on your left and follow the two white night tacks instead of orange ones!! Returning to the beginning, you have to cross an area of ground-hugging brambles too and very tall naturally growing plants (weeds)!!! Look out ahead for the two orange tacks to help you find your way back!
If you are not able to find an animal, don’t panic as you should still be able to follow the trail and get to the final cache. You could, however, miss out on collecting some of the info needed for the Bonus cache and you will need to answer questions about the animals to get the coords for it.
AT TIMES YOU WILL BE NEAR TO HOUSES SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU SHINE YOUR TORCHES!!
Happy Hunting!
