Stage 1 – Rangi. N51 19.723 W000 47.066
This used to be called Woodbine cottage. When the house was renovated a brick was found with the date 1784 on it. At least one wall is made of wattle and daub. Originally much smaller it has been extended. At one time General and Mrs Hacker lived there – they had travelled from New Zealand aboard a ship called the Rangitiki. They changed the name of the house to Rangi – in the Maori language this means “lucky”
Looking at the telegraph pole it says BT 9M 04 * (where * is the answer to A)
Stage 2 – Memorial Hall. N51 19.598 W000 46.792
This was opened on 7th December 1921 at a cost of £1487 and on 26th February 1926 the terra-cotta tablet recording the names of those in whose memory the hall was erected was unveiled.
Starting at the top left of the plaque you should see W.S Ball. How many letters are there in the surname of the person below W.S Ball? This answer is B
Stage 3 – Holy Trinity Church N51 19.617 W000 46.653
The first church was built and consecrated in 1837. Work was then done on enlarging the church which was then completed in 1857 and a 3rd enlargement was completed in 1868.
The tower and spire were erected in 1882
On the noticeboard there is a phone number for Jim Rapley 01276 602C2.
NOTE I HAVE BEEN ADVISED THIS HAS GONE SO UNTIL I CAN CHECK IT OUT C IS 2 Stage 4 – The Royal Swan N51 19.865 W00 46.710
This has been here since at least the year 1700. At one time it had its own brewery at the rear of the inn. On the opposite side of the road is The Red Lion (now called Mr Bumbles). The parish registers at Yateley show that Joseph Glanville died at the Red Lion inn at Blackwater whilst travelling homeward to Devon. He was buried in 1636 so the inn is probably the oldest in Blackwater.
Outside the Royal Swan there is a no entry sign on a pole.
On it there is a black sticker with a white number on it. This number is D
Stage 5 – William Cooks house N51 19.823 W000 46.889
Stand by the gate and face away from the road. You should be looking at a house that William Cook built. To the embarrassment of later inhabitants he placed his initials (W.C) in stone above the door. It is now sheltered housing for the elderly where my Nan used to live before she sadly passed away..
The name on the plaque on the wall is “The…” The number of letters in the second word is E
Stage 6 – Nash Cottage and Poplar cottage N51 19.810 W000 46.990
These were built around 1640. The adjoining Hurstleigh cottage was built later and still has the original brick floors
Looking at the (new) lamp post outside it has a sticker with 2 numbers on it. Add these 2 numbers together to give you “F”
Final coordinates are:
N51 D(E+F).(B+C)CB
W000 (A+D)(C+F).AD(A+B)
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE FTF - BLEACHEDWESTIE :)
