Geocache Description:

Little nuggets that make you go weeeeee....

The Organ Trail!

The Organ Trail is a series of caches with special dedication to combining my fondness of geocaching and medicine.  As a surgical resident I spend much time living at the hospital but when not there geocaching has become a favorite!  Its always been a good way to get out of the house and have some healthy fun.  To take healthy to the next level I wanted to make a series of caches which drew attention to different aspects of medicine and healthcare, hence The Organ Trail was born!

Little Nuggets of Different Type

Here's number TEN in the series, a two-fer of learning!  The cache is located near a Nephrology office, specialists in the kidney... which makes weeeeee.  There are various type of diseases related to the kidney, from auto-immune to acquired and range throughout the ages from young to old.  Did you know that chronic uncontrolled hypertension can damage the kidney?  Same with diabetes thats not controlled!  So I urge all of you who have hypertension or diabetes to be sure you do your best to keep both under control!  For those who dont get regular checkups, I urge you to!  If you dont keep your body healthy, you will wind up with kidney's that dont work anymore.  Then you will have to rely on dialysis, also right near the cache location.

Dialysis is a way to filter your blood to remove the waste products and water that your kidney would normally.  There are different types including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.   Hemodialysis hooks you up to a machine where your blood circulates through and you spend about 4 hours 3-4 times a week getting filtered.  There are new home dialysis units where you spend most nights hooked up.  Peritoneal dialysis is where you have a tube that goes into your abdomen and you fill your abdomen around your intestines with a special fluid.  This fluid draws the waste products into your abdomen and then when you drain your abdomen, the waste goes with it.  If both sound less than idea, you could try to become a transplant recipient, something that Maine Medical Center provides through the transplant program.  If all this sounds too much then realize that preventative care is the easiest route!

Now for the other nuggets!  The cute little kiddo nuggets!  Nearby is also a Pediatrics office where the little nuggets that say "weeeeee" can get checked out!  Pediatrics ranges throughout such different times in a human life.  It starts out with medicine with someone who cant talk back and is growing at incredible rates, where even ounces of weight are measured.  Lets not mention needing to take care of teens, even if they do think they're invincible!

You are looking for a park and grab... maybe!  Muggle city during business hours.  Might be easier on a night or weekend!  First to find prize but I wouldnt give it to your young kids because it might be a bit small for them!
