This is how I remember it! In the field of hay a very long ago, were two brothers, ages 11 and 8. Big brother always looked after the younger brother cuz he was so small. School group pictures, always had the younger brother sitting on the front row, on a chair. The smallest one in the class. Fine featured and slight of build. Big brother always wore the “husky denims, while younger brother wore the “slim” denims. For Christmas, one year they each received a Red Recurve Bow, complete with a hip quiver and three arrows. The note from Santa was very clear on how to use this gift and the power Dad had over it’s use and consequences when misused. The paper target was soon shot to shreds, and all of the paper plates were used up by these two sibling pals. So other targets were sought after, field mice in the grain Silo were fair game in Dads opinion, as were the Pigeons. However, the field mice went to the barn cats and the cattle dogs, and the Pigeons we were to eat. Things were looking up for these two “hunter and gathering” boys. It was in the field of standing hay during the watering process, looking for field mice. That big brother came up with a game. Stand back to back, pull a full draw on the bow and shoot directly overhead, and see how close the arrow would land next to us. We are alive today, because where we lived the wind never stopped blowing. And Dad spotted us in the field while attending to the watering. The wrath that I experienced that day by Dad, had me crying, and my Big brother taking a boot kick n, for putting us both in danger. I have no idea where those bows ended up, but we never saw them again. I love my Big Brother! Dad died of a sudden heart attack 3 years after that event, and our family was split at the seams. It has been years since I have seen My Big brother! No idea if he lives or is dead. I drive by here often, so I have placed this cache as a reminder when I drive by it and all of the hay fields nearby, to “Big Bro” my memories live on!
