Een cache die geschiedenis, kunst, mooie natuur en high-tech combineert. Te voet te doen in 20 minuten, maar leuker per bootje (reken dan 1,5 uur). In ieder geval nodig: mobieltje (geen tegoed vereist).
Deze cache brengt je naar een prachtig en goed verstopt plekje in het centrum van Utrecht, tussen station en Kruisvaart. Ondanks de ligging is het een oase van rust in het hartje van de stad.
In de 17e eeuw werd de vaart - destijds 2 kilometer lang - aangelegd om landbouwproducten te vervoeren naar de markt. Maar de Kruisvaart zorgde ook voor vermaak, bijvoorbeeld met de officiele badgelegenheid waar je tot 1910 onder toezicht in de vaart kon zwemmen.
Halverwege de kruisvaart zie je de oude hefbrug waar vroeger een trein over reed richting de veilinghaven. Later, toen de PTT zijn distributiecentrum op het station gevestigd had, werd de hefbrug gebruikt als noodingang voor de brandweer.
Inmiddels wordt de post wordt niet meer per trein vervoerd en het oude distributiecentrum is tegen de vlakte gegaan. Uit de as is de grootste street-art locatie van Utrecht herrezen. Op een zonnige dag kun je hier de graffiti kunstenaars aan het werk zien, onder leiding van
KBTR. Zijn identiteit is onbekend, maar zijn werk is veelvuldig in het nieuws en er werd oa een aflevering van EenVandaag aan hem gewijd.
De hefbrug is niet meer in gebruik. Hij staat er bij als een poortwachter, ter bescherming van het achterliggende stuk groen. Binnenkort zal hij de strijd verliezen. Want de gemeente heeft ambitieuze plannen met het stukje natuur tussen spoor en de vaart. In de komende jaren wordt er langs het water een busbaan gebouwd waar iedere dag 1100 bussen over rijden. Plus 800 woningen (en bijbehorende auto's).
De natuur zal dus moeten wijken. Geniet daarom nog snel van de prachtige planten en dieren die hier wonen. Aalscholvers, ganzen, waterhoentjes, futen, konijnen, torenvalken en vleermuizen. En laat je vangen door de mooie geluiden en de geurige bloesem.
De cache is te bereiken via land, maar ik raad je aan om een kano of fluisterboot te huren op de Oudegracht. Het is een prachtige route, zeker als je via de Nieuwegracht terug vaart. Reken 1,5 uur voor een tochtje. Op WP1 vind je de instructies voor de uiteindelijk cache plaats.
Heb je de cache gevonden, trakteer jezelf dan op een drankje bij een van de cafeetjes in de buurt waar je met een boot aan kunt leggen, zoals bij de kade van Tivoli de Helling.

This cache will take you to a beautiful and quiescent spot in the very center of Utrecht. Required equipment: mobile phone with Dutch simcard (no credit required though), possibly a boat.
In the 17th century this canal - at that time 2 km long - was built to ship agriculture products to the city market. But the canal also entertained the city's citizens, for example with the official bathing facility until 1910.
In the middle you'll encounter the old lift bridge, that allowed trains to reach the auction harbour and market area (nowadays: Jaarbeurs conference center). Afterwards, the Dutch Post (PTT) had its main distribution center at the railway station and this bridge was used as emergency entrance for fire trucks.
Nowaways, Dutch mail doesn't touch a train anymore and the old buildings have been demolished. Risen from the ashes has the largest street art location of Utrecht, called "The Yard", along with a skateboard area. On a sunny day, you can see the artists working here, whom have split the available real estate in an orderly manner. Paintings are renewed every couple months. One of the most famous artists whose work you can see here, is
KBTR. His identity is unknown, but a documentary about him was aired on Dutch television in 2011.
The bridge is not in use anymore. His primary function is that of gatekeeper of the nature beyond the water. Some day in the near future he will loose this battle, as the city council has decided that a new residential area is to be built here, including the main public transport exit of the central station (with 1100 busses/day). Luckily the state of economy has postponed these plans for some years.
So nature will yield. While you can, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and nature. Species that live here, include various types of geese, cormorants, coots, moorhens, grebes, wild bunnies, kestrels and Daubenton's bats. Close your eyes and let the noises and fragrant blossom enchant you.
The cache is reachable by land (take 30 minutes back and forth from central station) but I'd advise you to rent a canoe or whisper boat at the Oudegracht. It's a beautiful route by water, especially if you go back by the Nieuwegracht. Take 1,5 hour minimum for a return trip by water. At WP1 you'll find the instructions for the final cache location.
When you have found the cache, celebrate with a cool drink at one of the water-side bars located conveniently nearby. There's a handy place to dock at Tivoli de Helling.
