The Belmore Troll Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RobboAndMum: A few people have had to cart screwdrivers along this trail to open the container and so with nothing to hand to replace this like for like, we are archiving rather than just replacing with something more regular.

Geocache Description:

This cache takes you through Belmore Forest to find the Troll's Lair and the compartmented cache he guards. Bring the tools you need to access it!

The Belmore Troll is a seldom seen beast, who guards the cache you seek. If you're lucky, he'll be round the other side of Belmore Forest at Pollnagollum cave when you drop by, which is also worth a view - not only for the stunning waterfall but also for another geocache ("Belmore Fall" - GCTX75) which you might want to find while you're visiting.

From Enniskillen, head towards Derrygonnelly on the A46, before branching off just outside the town boundary to your left, and out the B81 until you see a sign for Boho. Turn off for Boho and after you pass the Linnet Inn, the turnoff for Belmore Forest is on your left after 3/4 mile.

Once up the forest drive, you can park either at the main carpark, or at the suggested location just prior to this, at the waypointed coordinates. If you park at the waypointed coordinates, the route to this cache is easily accessible by children, or if you have a pram. The cache itself is a little harder to access, and you will want waterproof shoes.

The compartmented cache is located within the Troll's Lair, and he has protected its contents well from prying fingers - but this problem can be easily overcome with a little help from a VERY SMALL Phillips (crosshead) screwdriver.

The log itself can be accessed with the use of a small Phillips screwdriver but unless you bring your own pen, you will need to make sure your screwdriver is small enough to also access the Troll's pencil, which is held within another compartment of the cache.

The route through Belmore Forest is circular, and if you park just beyond the waypointed coordinates at the main carpark, you can visit Pollnagollum cave and the waterfall that feeds into it (and a disused quarry) first, before embarking on a (steep in places) walk around to the Troll's Lair.

As mentioned above, the route to the cache from the waypointed parking is an easy walk and suitable for prams, but if you wish to walk the full route in either direction, it will be too steep for prams or small children and is only suitable for those of moderate fitness. The full route is just over 4 miles long over gravel forest track and is certainly worth doing for the views over Belmore Mountain and wider Fermanagh.

YOU WILL NEED:
- Torch (a small LED torch is adequate)
- A very small headed Phillips (crosshead) screwdriver
- Waterproof footwear
