Park Hours: Dawn to Dusk

SCHUMACHER POND DESCRIPTION:

Schumaker Pond is 38 acres roughly and is surrounded by Schumaker Park and the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art.

SCHUMACHER PARK DESCRIPTION:

Schumaker Park is a beautiful, 11 acre wooded area nestled peacefully along the waterline of Schumaker Pond. The park is somehow spacious and intimate at the same time, making it perfect for either a large gathering or a quiet, casual outing.

Family reunions or corporate picnics, for instance, can be easily accommodated in the large pavilion which sits up on the hill overlooking the water. An oversized grill is situated right next to the pavilion, in its own shelter, making it easy to cook on the spot for big groups.

At the other end of the park is a playground with swings, slides, riding toys and a play set. Picnic tables and benches are spread throughout the well-shaded park, providing many separate areas for rest and relaxation.

Down the hill from the wooded area is a narrow beach along the pond and a long dock which can be used for fishing. There is also an 18-hole disc golf course spread throughout Schumaker Park, affectionately called “the Schu” by regular players.

WARD MUSEUM DESCRIPTION

Inside, exhibits include:
- The Ward Brothers Workshop features the carvings of Lemuel and Stephen Ward.
- The Decoy in Time Gallery is a reconstructed wetland environment complete with decoys, birds, hunting paraphernalia, morning mist, and even calling ducks.
- The Habitat Theater features a children’s interative puppet theater, a gallery space for student art, and educational wall panels. Visitors can also use the interactive kiosk, which features games and programs that explore birdcalls, migration patterns, diet, and habitat.
- The World Championship Gallery where carvings of eagles, swans, owls, geese, ducks, herons, and songbirds appear to come to life.

Outside, nature trails along Schumaker Pond provide interpretation and easy navigation through a wetland environment. From the edge of the pond, you can watch the geese, ducks, and other water-fowl both on the pond, on land and in the air.

HISTORY OF WARD MUSEUM:

In 1975 the Ward Foundation established the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art. Until 1991 the Ward Museum was housed in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall on the campus of Salisbury University.

Expanding over the next decade and a half, the museum eventually outgrew its housing on campus and in 1992 the Ward Museum opened at Schumaker Pond where it remains today.

In 2000 the Ward Foundation donated the Ward Museum facility and its collections to Salisbury University.
