In 1885 the Seufert brothers built their first fish wheel. At one
time or another the Seufert’s owned and operated 4 seines, 17 fish
wheel scows, and 19 stationary fish wheels. Remains of the
foundation of fish wheel #5 can still be seen today just west of
the mouth of 15 mile creek. In 1913 this fish wheel delivered 35
tons of fish in one day. Fish wheel #5 was in operation for 21
years and was responsible for 4 ½ million pounds of fish. More fish
wheels were operated around this city than anywhere else in the
world. When the Seufert Cannery was in full operation it could
handle about 32 tons of fish every day.
Fish wheels were outlawed in Oregon in 1926, most operations
moved across the river to Washington. When fish wheels were
outlawed completely the Seufert brothers continued to buy fish from
the Native Americans who caught them with dip nets at Celilo
Falls.
Many Chinese immigrants were brought to the Seufert cannery to
clean the fish and lived in a bunkhouse located on the grounds. Two
icehouses were buried here to keep the ice from melting during the
heat of the summer. The icehouses supplied ice to the cannery so
that the fish wouldn’t spoil.

During the tourist season make sure that you visit the rose
garden that was originally planted by the caretaker of the cannery.
There are many things to see and do here at the cannery site so be
sure to allow enough time to enjoy the area and have a picnic.
During certain times of the year the vehicle gate may be closed, if
this is the case… park off to the side of the road and walk in.
